Rules

Octave
  • Each team consists of 4 students.
  • Only one team per school.
  • The event is about writing the lyrics and lending music to it.
  • Participants can bring any number of instruments/accompaniments (All information about the instruments to be submitted at the registration desk).
  • Use of instruments is NOT compulsory.
  • No karaoke is allowed.
  • Only original songs are permitted.
  • Lyrics can be in English, Kannada, Hindi, or Tamil (Only one language can be used throughout the song).
  • Usage of derogatory and unparliamentary languages is not permitted.
  • Any off-topic songs will be disqualified on judges’ suggestions.
  • No devices are permitted during the event.
  • There will be no retakes or restarts unless the judges deem necessary.
  • Under no conditions will extra time be given.
  • In all cases judges’ decisions are final.
  • Phase 1 – The Qualifier:
    • This phase will be conducted before the event and the teams should do it at their respective schools.
    • In this phase, all schools will be given 5 or more tunes per genre and for Indian classical – Carnatic genre, names of 5 ragas which will be sent to all participants at the same time.
    • The Genres are – Pop, Rock, Folk (Indian or foreign), Indian Classical – Carnatic, Western classical, Slow/Relaxing.
    • With these tunes the participants have to create a 2-minute song (maximum).
    • The teams can use as many tunes as they prefer by creating a mashup or by using only one tune (it is the team’s choice).
    • The tunes given cannot be modified.
    • No external tunes can be added.
    • Deadline will be the same for all schools and will not be extended.
    • A video recording is to be submitted to the host school before/on the deadline date.
    • No special effects or editing is permitted, and any external support will result in immediate disqualification.
    • 8 teams – the octave – will be chosen from this round.
  • Phase 2 – The Semifinal:
    • This phase will be conducted on the day of the event.
    • In this phase, a common topic will be given to the 8 teams qualified for this round.
    • 30 minutes will be allotted for making of a song (whose maximum duration is 3 minutes).
    • Any genre can be used.
    • The topic cannot be modified in any manner. The lyrics can be made from the given topic.
    • The songs will be presented to the judges live.
    • Only 3 teams can qualify from this round to the finals.
  • Phase 3 – The Finale:
    • This phase will be conducted on the day of the event.
    • A short story will be given to all the teams, and they have to make a song in any genre of their choice.
    • The gist or meaning of the story must be captured in the song and events occurring in the story can be modified or other events can be added.
    • 10 minutes will be given for reading the story and combining ideas depending on the length of the given story. A specific time will be given before beginning.
    • 45 minutes will be given for making the song.
    • 3 minutes are allotted for performing the song.
    • The judges will decide the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams according to the performance in this phase.
  • Apart from the Trophy and Certificate, the winning team will get the chance to perform any song of their choice in the closing ceremony in front of all the participants.
